Lights On Afterschool 2015
Sanford Middle School

Lights On Afterschool #LoAMN15 is the a nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. Sanford Middle School celebrated by wearing yellow (267 students participated!) and creating a bulletin board of light bulbs that reflect what they like about their after school program. Students also participated in a contest to make creative use of an old incandescent light bulb.

At Jenny Lind, our elementary students celebrated Lights On Afterschool all week long! Flyers around the school announced the rooms of staff who teach in after school, thanking them for Making Our Future Bright. In the cafeteria, students would reflect on and write responses to the question “why is this afterschool program important to me?” They would then color in the lightbulb sheet to to go with their answers. The results are proudly hanging in the cafeteria so every student going through the lunch line can see what students say makes afterschool at Jenny Lind great. In SciGirls, our young scientists got to turn the lights on themselves, doing a Squishy Circuits project where conductive and insulating dough would work together to make LED diodes light up. We capped the week distributing Lights On Afterschool MCE wristbands with the added surprise of heat-sensitive color changing. In all, it was an illuminating week that gave us all a chance to remember the benefits of afterschool programming at Jenny Lind and across Minneapolis and renew the call to keep the lights on!

At Barton, we celebrated Lights on Afterschool with a photobooth in the Commons. It was a blast! Check out the pictures below.
